The Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS) needed a comprehensive system for the New Children's Hospital, to enable the provision of services for hundreds of young patients every day.
Keeping in mind the needs of the young patients, we delivered a versatile service and room management solution for the New Children’s Hospital. Young patients now truly enjoy avatars, our playful and colorful virtual characters, which are part of the self check-in solution.
Axel brings efficiency for the New Children’s Hospital in managing facilities, scheduling work and analyzing daily operations. In addition, the real-time monitoring of patient flows supports the personnel in their work.
The New Children's Hospital is the main provider of specialized health care for pediatric patients in Finland. The main goal for the hospital is to ensure an optimal flow of medical operations and to enable a pleasant treatment experience for young children and their parents. In spring 2017, the hospital was looking for a new patient flow and room management system. Axel Health was selected as the supplier of the new solution.
“Axel is a patient-centric solution that keeps your data safe and secure. Our patients have really appreciated Axel avatars which make visits more pleasant for them. Positive patient experience is our number one priority and Axel Health has done an outstanding job in establishing that."
Pekka Lahdenne, Head of Digital and Innovation Services, MD, PhD, HUS New Children’s Hospital
The New Children’s Hospital was opened in September 2018 in Meilahti, Helsinki. In addition to the software, the Axel system in the New Children’s Hospital consists of hundreds of devices that guide children and their parents to the correct waiting lobby through the hospital corridors decorated with murals.
Part of the self check-in solution are virtual characters, avatars. Already in the entrance lobby or in the parking garage, children can choose their favourite avatar to be printed out on a wristband. Avatars will stay with them through the hospital stay, making the visit more pleasant. Avatars are also used when calling young patients in. Patients can be called in with one mouse-click and the call in information is shown on door displays and info displays in the waiting lobby. The healthcare professionals can see when the patients arrive and monitor the progress of the treatment in real time on their screens.
In addition to these features, Axel helps the hospital manage its facilities and work shift planning as well as provides reports containing statistical data on the hospital operations.
Axel significantly improves patient flow management in the hospital. Healthcare professionals are provided with real-time information on patients and their appointments. The possibility to transfer patients from one specialist to another has also improved work efficiency.
Self-service kiosks help young patients and their parents find their way in the large building complex. Avatars offer guidance and information to young patients and transform their visit into an adventure.
Axel also helps optimizing and improving the use of facilities, ensuring that there are enough available rooms for all resources and shifts. Axel’s statistics and reports help assess and analyze the efficiency of the hospital's daily operations.
